Welcome to Con Connell’s poetry pages.
The following pages give an introduction to some of Con’s work and a flavour of his poetic style. Con’s work is eclectic, and although he has some recurring themes, topics of all types can come under his lyrical pen. Much of his work is amusing and it mostly rhymes, which is probably why his poems are very accessible and popular with the general reader. His poetry has been described by The Guardian as “…. punning, comic ..”, and he has also featured in ‘Poets in Pinstripes’ in The Independent.
Con’s poem ‘Harvest Time’ was enacted by Liza Tarbuck as part of BBC TWO's Essential Poems For Britain - a special programme featuring the best of British poetry in a contemporary visual anthology that celebrated what it is to be British. The Heritage Lottery Fund chose the poem Harvest Time to include in its book describing projects it has funded, because the poem “...reflected a view of ‘England’ and what makes our heritage so special.” Click here to read ‘Harvest Time’
Con lives and works in Southampton, Hampshire. He is a member of the Poetry Society, a founding member of the Southampton Stanza, a member of the Test Valley Poets and the Hanger Farm Poets. He has given readings at a number of venues, including The Alexandra Palace in London. Click here to read another of Con’s poems.
An ardent football fan, he is currently Poet in Residence at Southampton Football Club, for whom his poetry appears in match-day programmes. Click here to find out a little more about this aspect of his work.
Poetic Threads: Another of Con’s favoured themes is inspired by the work of textile workers and artists. This interest led to his co-edited collection ‘Poetry in Stitches’ published by the National Needlework Archive. Click here to read more about Con’s textile poetry.
